The theme in Crane's story revolves around a paradigm shift created by the sheriff's marriage. What event in our world do you feel is causing or will cause an equivalent paradigm shift for the residents of Brevard county?
I think global warming is an imminent problem which has the potential to cause a paradigm shift in our world and our county. The world will soon be forced to enter a new thought process for using energy which must consider the most efficient way of doing things. It is now merely a problem that we have made steps to fix, but there has not been a substantial change in thinking, I think within the next decade or so it will be necessary for every person to highly consider it in their every day life. -Andrew Schwarz
I agree completely with andrew! Related to Andrew's topic something that could cause a paradigm shift specifically in our county could be the introduction of alternative fuel sources for our vehicles. A common daily concern is to not drive unless we have to because of the high price of fossil fuels. Yet, if hydrogen or electric vehicles are utilized our thought process would change completely and driving can become a thing of leisure yet again! -Christian Prusinski
I believe that pollution is a major problem that one day might lead to a paradigm in our economy. Many people these days rely on cars to go everywhere, while biking, walking, and even using the public transportation systems could suffice for their means of transportation. Also, with the growing lack of natural resources, our economy needs to begin to fix this problem that one day may become the demise of our society, county, and world as a whole.
I completely agree with Andrew and Christian. Problems such as global warming and insufficient fuel sources could definitely cause a paradigm shift in our world, let alone Brevard County. I think that another cause for a paradigm shift would be if more hotels are constructed on the beach. Every hotel that is built on the beach is taller than the last one. This could cause a large population rise in Brevard and potentially effect traffic and many other things. This could also affect the way others view Brevard County. It could slowly become more of tourist trap.
One of the major problems of today is the current economic crisis, and I believe this could cause a paradigm shift in our country as well as Brevard county, if it has not already. If the economy continues on the downward trend residents of Brevard will have to change the way they think about and spend money. This could even cause lower enrollment at our own school because parents may no longer be able to afford to send their students to a private school.
A paradigm shift in Brevard county could easily be caused by the increase or deacrease of property taxes. The property taxes in the county are the among the highest in the nation even though property values continue to plummet. If the taxes decrease, Brevard County will be in better shape economically, but if the taxes were to increase, citizens could lose their jobs and be in a state of economic emergency.
Two major problems that our world is dealing with right now is global warming and the economy. All of these problems plus more could cause a paradigm shift in our world, causing many Americans to change daily aspects of our lives. These problems affect people everywhere including Brevard County. If this downward shift continues our economy will be in worse shape than it is now. These problems can not be left for future generations, but needs to be resolved now in order for us to recover from our losses. We need to take action now!
I agree with Kelsey and Katie; the economy and the pollution of fossil fuels is a paradigm shift that only we can fix. By reducing the use of fossil fuels, we can possibly reduce or even eliminate this problem occuring throughout the world. The costs of fuel reflect on how poor the economy is doing, and yet again, that is a problem that only we can fix ourselves. -Stephanie DuBois
Jackie Bell: Just curious, why does everyone have to agree with what everyone else said? We need more original ideas and thoughts to spark discussions. I'm not saying that agreeing with what someone else has said is a bad thing, I just think we all need to contribute something of our own. Anyway, just getting home from the candidate forum, I feel as if the upcoming elections on every level will have a powerful and far reaching effect on Brevard County citizens. Depending on who we chose to represent our interests in the government will determine what course we are steered toward, whether it be on the international, national, or local level.
I agree with Valerie. I feel that our potential economic tax crisis is a great example of pardigm shift. Regardless of whether the economy goes down because of high taxes or is made better by lower taxes, a paradigm shift in this area is inevitable.
Sorry Jackie, but we were at the same forum, and so it is the most major paradigm shift on my mind, so I am forced to agree with you. Obviously, the upcoming elections, from local levels to national ones, will cause major paradigm shifts. In the race for the presidency, we have an historic election approaching, no matter which candidate is elected: either we will witness the inauguration of the first African-American president or the first woman vice president. One way or the other, some people will be unhappy; we are stepping outside the boundaries of historic normalcy, of the old regime that has so long dominated the political system of the nation. Just as the sheriff's marriage changed the atmosphere of the little town of Yellow Sky, the acceptance of a new "suitor" into the White House will hopefully change the entire political climate. I believe change is what we need. --Alex Burton
I agree with Kelsey. The current economic crisis is causing a paradigm shift in Brevard County. People are more conscious of spending and saving habits than in the past, this could eventually take a toll on local businesses such as retail stores and restaurants and depreciate property even more than it already has in our area.
An equvalent paradigm for our local community is the sky rocketing gas prices. This has caused many restaurants and car dealerships to close down. The paradidgm shift is mainly altering people to be more frugal when dealing with their own money. Since gas is so expensive, higher priced cars aren't being purchased which leads to the closing of dealerships. Also people dont want to waste gas and money driving to eat out, in result many restaurants have been shut down as well.
To build off Andrew's thought of global warming, Brevard county residents are being affected by the extreme beach erosion. With the ocean levels rising at a ridiculous pace, and hurricanes ripping through, the beach will soon be nonexistent, leaving "Beachside" no so much on the beach.. And not to completely disagree with Lauren, but the hotels issue isn't something that should really worry us; hotel rates are really down right now (I work at a hotel). For the past 2 months, none of the local hotels have been at an occupancy rate above 30%, which is extremely low.. I can see why you would come up with that though, there are way to many hotels on the beach, and i agree that there really shouldn't be that many, but with the economy as it is right now I don't think that many people will be wanting to come to Brevard. -Rachel Ruppert
I believe that the current economy will soon cause a paradigm shift in our lives not only in brevard county, but throughout the country. The price of living has increased sufficiently and soon, people wont be able to afford it. This is causing people to seriously consider their needs compared to their wants, and durastically cut down their spending.
I believe that an equivalent paradigm for Brevard County especially will be the retirement crisis of the BabyBoomers in the next twenty years. In particular,, Brevard County, the BabyBoomers populate an enormous percentage of the working force and when that ten or so year span occurs when they all reach retirement age, there will be a huge deficit in the job market; instead of lack of employment opportunities, there will be a surplus of unoccupied jobs, hence requiring our generation to fill these shoes.
I agree with Alyson for retirement. I believe the fact that people are living longer and that when the retirement money from social security was first given the average life span was much shorter and most people didn't live to even receive the benefits. Now that people are living off their retirement money for 20 years an inevitable paradigm shift will be created, not only in Brevard County but all around the US Kelly
The elections are cause a paradigm shifts in Brevard Country. Mostly because for the first time in history a majority white nation will be runned by a black man. Also, Obama plans on changing or energy policies, so just maybe gas wont be as important as it is today, and that would be a big shift. Also gas prices created a paradigm shift as well in Brevard in that we can't travel around as much as we would've pleased.
I agree with Rachel and with Lara. The gas prices but mainly the economy is a huge problem which appears to be leading to a paradigm shift in our country, if not the world. Higher gas prices lead to higher production prices which in turn, hurts the economy. With basically all the business injured, the stock markets plummet, which furthers the economic crisis. Yes, global warming is a huge problem and needs to be taken seriously but the economy is speedily dwindling and a crashed economy looks to be around the corner compared to the global warming issue.
A possible(but unlikely) cause of a paradigm shift in Brevard County could be beach erosion. If enough sand were to wash away then the dyanamics and economy of the area could change. For instance, if the beach could no longer provide entertainment like surfing, beack volleyball, or tanning then many people may have to find alternate activities for their free time. At the same time, the economy may change because the tourism would decrease because Cocoa Beach would no longer have a beach.
I believe the economy crisis could cause a paradigm shift in our county, our country and our entire world. This is going to affect the way Americans live their life and spend their money, causing buisnesses to close as people tighten their wallets.
The developement of brevard county will, and has causes a paradigm shift in our area. Many people are drawn to our area as more communities, houses, and businesses are being developed. These development lead to continued changes, from roads, to an overload of new businesses, a rise in population, polution, a greater demand for schooling and so on. More specifically, the developement of Viera from cow pastures to thriving malls and tons of houseing, has changed and is sontinuing to chang how the people of brevard county interact, and live. With continued development with come continued changes.
a major paradigm shift in the world today especially in the us would be oil prices. Although very high lately, a recent drop to below 90$ a barrel in the us could greatly improve upon our economy and daily lives in general.
Amongst global warming, oil prices, and the economy, I think a paradigm shift will occur with the upcoming elections for local positions. Everywhere I go I see signs and people standing on street coroners saying to vote for so-and-so for Senate!! So-and-so for schoolboard district!! whats-her-face for Brevard tax collector!
All these offices could face a potential shift in power towards another person, which in turn will effect how Brevard County is managed, hence, effecting its residents.
I agree with andrew and christian, that global warming is an paradigm that must be addressed immediately, for this change in our global climates, will force upon everyone a new way of thinking
In our community today, it is obvious that the Florida Bright Futures program has caused an enormous difference in recent years. Before the program was created, students had no more reason to stay in-state than they did to leave; now that Florida schools are more affordable, more and more students are staying in the state and contributing to the growth of Brevard County.
